Bærum Kunsthall, Fornebu, Norway 08.09.2022 to 2.10.2022
The archive is a laboratory of contemplation. It is through the relations that bind the elements it accumulates that we understand and perceive it. Mutable and vibrant, it is a constant practice which reacts to what it includes and excludes, rearranging its structures and ever changing its configuration. This installation therefore registers an instant in this process. An unedited section of the artist’s archive of paintings, it includes seventy works displayed as accessed on a screen, code-order, as the result of a database search by their size, 40 x 30 cm.
Organized in a progressive order, every painting is distinguished by a code that collects their essential information, such as dimension, year of creation and material composition. The code is what identifies both the canvas and its documentation in the digital archive - a picture and a set of information registered among the folders stored in the artist’s cloud. In its twofold configuration, the digital archive is both a collection of visual documentation of paintings - indexical to the original canvases - as well as an active imaginative apparatus that shapes the artists relation to them, as well as the debris of memories crumbling from the images.
A comprehensive view of both a section of the archiving process and a group of works, the installation includes also what is missing for the digital traces left in the database. Incapable to capture the materiality of the object but able to reconfigure its trace, it grasps a moment of its existence through the digital properties which accompany the object as a caption. The empty spots intend to reveal, therefore, the code that names both the object and the files as the subject of the display.
“untitled: 4020-5422” is the continuation of a project initiated in 2021 for the exhibition “Kirjasto/Library” at ForumBox Gallery, Helsinki, which focuses on exhibition-making as a form of archive visualization. Here changes, revolutions and rearrangements are, rather than curatorial choices, impositions dictated by the archiving process itself and its happenings.
